Highlights
“Unforgettable sunsets, the historic Bidonvia Sassolungo and nature as far as the eye can see. Val Gardena is a true gem.”
A fantastic via ferrata sets the tone for our first day. At Passo Gardena, we gear up, helmet, gloves, harness and start the approach. A quick break at Dantercepies Lounge for elderflower cordial and a slice of cake, then we clip our carabiners in and start the climb, Sassolungo is our backdrop. At the top, we arrive just in time for sunset, pink peaks, silence, and pure magic.
An early, light breakfast and we’re among the first on the historic Bidonvia to Forcella Sassolungo. The ascent is thrilling, the panorama breathtaking, Marmolada in the distance. After a stop at Toni Demez, we follow trail 525 to Rifugio Vicenza and on to Sella Pass. Back at the hotel, a well-earned aperitif and a glass of Kerner complete the day.
Today’s goal is the Stevia hut and the Puez plateau. The climb from Daunëi is demanding, but the views of Cir, Sella, and Sassolungo make every step worthwhile. At the hut, we enjoy a platter of local produce surrounded by grazing sheep, then descend via the scenic Forcella San Silvestro. Sunset finds us relaxing in the garden at Antares.
A slow morning at last, with a peaceful breakfast with fresh bread, fruit, and yoghurt. Before leaving, we take a final walk through Vallunga, where soft grass and the sound of the stream invite us to pause. We refill our bottles at the fountain and start the journey back home, carrying with us the beauty of these mountains.
Via ferrata kit, helmet, and gloves (or rent them in the village), waterproof clothing, hiking boots, and poles for comfort on longer trails.
No need for a car, free shuttle buses connect all the main passes, making it easy to explore while reducing your impact.
Mountain weather changes quickly: avoid via ferratas if storms are forecasted, but don’t forget sunscreen for bright, clear days.
