“Campitello is a place brimming with romance: pink mountains, a snow-covered village, delicious food in the mountain huts. It’s like being in a fairy tale.”
As we only have a weekend, I planned to make the most of every moment, right from the moment we arrive. So we get settled in our room, get changed and take the cable car to Passo Sella, where a snowmobile is waiting to take us to the Friederich August Hut. Dinner is only served here twice a week, so it needs to be booked well in advance: warm woollen blankets, fabulous food and a starry sky we’ll never forget. It’s absolutely worth it.
It’s a beautiful day, so, we drive up to Passo San Pellegrino and from there we ride a horse-drawn sleigh for lunch at Rifugio Fuciade, enchanted by the photos we’d seen on social media. It feels like a fairy-tale village here, with little gingerbread houses nestled amongst the mountains. We walk back down to work off the delicious meal and spend the evening at the spa. To round off the day in style, we have dinner at the restaurant next to the B&B.
Not to waste the last day, we have a hearty breakfast early on, say goodbye to Gloria and the whole team who have looked after us over the past few days, and drive to Monzon. From here, we take the easy hike to the Gardeccia mountain hut. If you have time, you can climb up to the Vajolet hut, but we’d get there too late. So we enjoy everything to the last bit: we soak up the snow, the sun and the mountains… what a spectacular weekend.
Boots, poles and snowshoes. If you have one, bring a sledge: fun is guaranteed for grown-ups too.
Use public transport: it’s free with the Fassacard you receive at the hotel. And don’t waste water: drink tap water.
Dress in layers: the sun helps keep the cold at bay, but if it snows, the temperature drops sharply. Also, winter tyres or snow chains are compulsory.
